UniFi E7 vs U7 Pro Max: Two Upgrades, and a New Switch

Should I buy the UniFi E7 or the U7 Pro Max?

The E7 ($499) changes two things about the U7 Pro Max ($279) and asks for a new switch port to do it. It doubles the 6 GHz radio from 2×2 to 4×4, taking it from 5.8 to 11.5 Gbps, and replaces the 2.5 GbE uplink with 10 GbE. Both carry the same 4×4 5 GHz radio at 8.6 Gbps and real-time spectral analysis. The cost is the port class: the U7 Pro Max runs on PoE+ at 25 W, the E7 needs PoE++ at 43 W. What does $220 buy? Two upgrades. The E7 ($499) doubles the U7 Pro Max's ($279) 6 GHz radio to 4×4 at 11.5 Gbps, and replaces its 2.5 GbE uplink with 10 GbE. This is the widest step in the UniFi ceiling range, and unlike most matchups on this site it is not a single-variable decision. Between the U7 Pro Max and the U7 Pro XGS the only change is the port, for $20. Between the Pro Max and the E7 both the radio and the port change at once, and so does the power class.

The U7 Pro Max arrived in mid-2024 as the density model: eight streams, a 4×4 5 GHz radio, and spectral analysis, all on an ordinary PoE+ port. That last part is most of why it is the range's workhorse. The E7 is the flagship above it, and Ubiquiti publishes no release date for it on techspecs.ui.com, so this page makes no claim about when it shipped. The Switch Is the Real Cost

What must the switch supply? The U7 Pro Max runs on PoE+ (802.3at) at 25 W — any PoE+ port. The E7 needs PoE++ (802.3bt) at 43 W, and wants a 10 GbE port to use its uplink. On most UniFi switches 10 GbE lives only on SFP+, which carries no PoE, so the two requirements are often not on the same port. (E7 specs)

This is where the $220 stops being the price. A PoE+ switch that runs a U7 Pro Max today cannot power an E7 at all — 802.3at guarantees about 25.5 W at the powered device, and the E7's ceiling is 43 W. Upgrading the AP means upgrading the port, and on UniFi that usually means a different switch rather than a different setting.

Ubiquiti's Pro XG 8 PoE is the clean answer and lists at $499, the same as the AP. All eight of its 10 GbE RJ45 ports supply PoE++, on a 155 W budget — which at 43 W each is three E7 units, not eight. A single AP can instead run from Ubiquiti's 10G PoE++ Adapter (60W), whose ceiling covers 43 W.

The USW Pro Max 24 PoE illustrates the trap. It has PoE++ on all eight of its 2.5 GbE ports, so it will power an E7 — and the AP will then link at 2.5 GbE, exactly the U7 Pro Max's uplink. The 6 GHz Radio

How much faster on 6 GHz? Ubiquiti rates the E7 at 11.5 Gbps and the U7 Pro Max at 5.8 Gbps, both on 320 MHz channels. The E7 runs 4×4 on 6 GHz where every other tri-band model here runs 2×2. Ten streams against eight sounds like a general increase and is not one. Both APs put four streams on 5 GHz and two on 2.4 GHz. The entire difference is on 6 GHz, where the E7 has four and the U7 Pro Max two. Everything the upgrade buys, a client can only collect if it has a 6 GHz radio — which means Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7, and in practice a flagship phone or laptop from 2023 onward.

For a fleet that qualifies, four streams let the AP serve two full-width 6 GHz clients at once rather than in turn, and roughly double what the band carries in aggregate. For a fleet that does not, the band sits unused on both models and this section describes nothing you can buy. That is the single most important thing to establish before spending the $220.

Which one is uplink-bound? The U7 Pro Max, by a wide margin. It carries 14.4 Gbps of rated 5 and 6 GHz capacity behind a 2.5 GbE port — about 5.8 Gbps of radio per Gbps of wire. This is the counterintuitive part of the matchup. Adding radio usually tightens the wire, and here it loosens it, because the E7 adds a 10 GbE port at the same time. The U7 Pro Max has the tightest wire-to-air ratio of any AP on this site — its eight-stream radio can present more than 2.5 Gbps to a port that cannot take it, and at that point the AP is uplink-bound while it still has airtime.

Whether that ever happens depends on the room. Rated aggregates are ceilings measured under favourable conditions, and a busy office rarely drives an AP to them. A space that genuinely saturates 2.5 Gbps of uplink from one access point is a dense one full of modern clients — the same space that justifies the E7's 6 GHz radio. The two upgrades tend to be needed together, which is part of why Ubiquiti sells them together.

Capacity, Coverage, and the Physical Unit

What are the ratings? Ubiquiti rates the E7 for 1000+ clients across 185 m² and the U7 Pro Max for 500+ across 160 m². Both list real-time spectral analysis and both are rated -30 to 50 °C. The E7 is a 250 mm square at 1.8 kg; the Pro Max is a ⌀206 mm disc at 680 g. (U7 Pro Max specs)

Read the client figures as tiers rather than measurements. Ubiquiti's ratings across the range do not track tested capacity cleanly — the 2×2 U6 Lite lists 300+ against the 4×4 U6 Pro's 250+ — so 1000+ says the E7 sits a tier above rather than that it serves exactly twice as many devices. The coverage gap is smaller than the client gap, 16 percent, and both are open-space figures.

Spectral analysis is a tie and worth noting because it is easy to assume it comes with the flagship. Ubiquiti lists it on the U7 Pro Max, the U7 Pro XGS and the E7, and on neither six-stream model. A noisy spectrum is a reason to buy at this tier and not a reason to choose between these two.

The temperature rating is also a tie here at 50 °C, which is not true further down the range — the U7 Pro XGS stops at 40 °C. Physically the two are unlike: the E7 is a square panel that reads as equipment, the Pro Max a white disc. At 1.8 kg against 680 g, the E7 wants its supplied anchor into plasterboard. Both are indoor ceiling-mount units and neither is weather-rated.

Who Should Buy Which

Two questions decide this, in order. Does the closet supply PoE++ on a 10 GbE port, or is there budget to make it? And can the clients in the room use 6 GHz hard enough to fill a 4×4 radio? A no to the first makes the U7 Pro Max the only one of the two that works at all. A yes to the first and a no to the second makes the $220 an upgrade nothing in the room can spend.

Buy the E7 if:

  • The switch already has PoE++ on a 10 GbE port. That is the configuration in which the whole $499 is used, and it is the rarer closet.
  • The room is dense and the clients are recent. Four 6 GHz streams pay off across a population of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 devices.
  • One AP has to carry a large, busy space. 1000+ clients and 185 m² are the highest ratings of the nine tracked here.
  • The Pro Max is already uplink-bound. 14.4 Gbps of radio behind 2.5 GbE is the tightest ratio on this site; 10 GbE ends it.

Buy the U7 Pro Max if:

  • The closet is PoE+. 25 W runs on any 802.3at port. The E7's 43 W does not, and the switch upgrade is the larger cost.
  • Your clients are mixed or older. The 4×4 5 GHz radio is identical on both, and that is where most traffic still lives.
  • You are covering area rather than density. Two Pro Max units cost $59 less than one E7 and cover far more floor.
  • It is a home. A household will not present 500+ clients, and the money buys a second AP somewhere more useful.
